Garment care: What is cupro? How do you wash it?

Where does cupro come from? How to wash, iron, and care for clothing made from cupro?

Cupro is a fabric made of regenerated cellulose fibers from recycled cotton linter. Linter are the small silky cotton fibers that stick out of the cotton seed and are too small to spin. These short fibers, that would normally be discarded, are refined to be transformed into a regenerated fiber.

This material is processed and manufactured in a circular system, which means that the water in which it is processed is reused, reducing its environmental impact.

Since cupro is created from a natural material, the fabric it is biodegradable and compostable when it ends of its useful life.

The cupro fibers we use at SISA are certified by the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), which ensures responsible social, environmental and chemical practices during production. The GRS is a voluntary product standard for tracking and verifying the content of recycled materials in a final product. The standard applies to the full supply chain of the fabric and addresses traceability, environmental principles, social requirements, chemical content and labeling.

Cupro is breathable and regulates temperature like cotton, while it drapes like silk.

How to care for a garment made of cupro?

General instructions

It is indispensable to follow care instructions described in each composition tag, since different garments can require different cares depending on the type of cupro.

There are smooth and textured cupro fabrics, as well as some with a particularly soft finish.

Washing and drying

The majority of cupro garments can be hand washed with cold water using gentle soap, without rubbing or wringing. Lay the item flat in its natural shape on a drying rack or hang to dry.

Some pieces can be machine washed in a delicate cycle, also with gentle soap and cold water, on low spin. Cupro shrinks in hot water.

It is recommended to dry clean more delicate cupro pieces, such as dresses or pants, in order to keep their shape and natural softness of the fabric.

Cupro fabric hardens slightly after washing with water. This is normal. They recover their softness with ironing.

Ironing

Clothing made of cupro can be ironed at low or medium temperature, always on the reverse side so they don't become shiny.

Cupro does wrinkle, so to remove cupro fabric wrinkles we recommend ironing on the reverse side, rather that steaming, which may cause the fabric to crack.

To remove stains

The fabric should not be rubbed when removing stains, since it may discolor.

To remove an oil stain: put a bit of talcum powder to absorb the oil, without touching it for 2-3 days. Then, shake the talcum off and wash the garment according to the composition tag.

Special care

Even though some cupro garments can be maintained with delicate washing at home, we recommmend dry cleaning them occasionally. This helps keep the natural qualities of the fabric.
